The concept of OiRAyr golf was born in the mind of Charles McFarlane during 2004.
The actual OiR golf section was formed at the start of 2005. The start was somewhat inauspicious as the first games had to be called off because of horrendously bad weather.
The first OiR competition took place on 26th January 2005 when 15 hopefuls turned up to enjoy lovely weather and a fun competition.
Thursday then became the chosen day for OiR golf and soon a sequence of Seafield, Dalmilling, Fullarton and Girvan became normal.
Charles invented a unique handicap system so that the low handicap golfers didn’t win all the competitions, but eventually, in 2006, he handed over the leadership reins to Jack McGuinness. Jack introduced a number of innovations to OiR golf including technicolor score cards, golf days at other clubs and matches against other groups. Jack continued as leader until 2010 when he was succeeded by John Clark. One of John’s aims was to try and improve the knowledge of OiR golfers on the Rules and Etiquette of the game.
